Maintenance Workshop Session Descriptions*

Appliance Repair – HD Supply – This class is designed to provide an overview of the working systems of the refrigerator, dishwasher, and range (gas or electric). Students will learn about the most common service requests along with the solutions.

  • Safety when making repairs
  • The refrigerator
  • The dishwasher
  • The range (gas or electric)
  • Repair versus replacement of the appliance
  • Learn how to make common kitchen appliance repairs
  • Avoid having to call an outside repair company

Bug Off—The Latest Bed Bug Treatment Solutions – Eric Braun, Rentokil’s Bed Bug Line of Business Manager, will present the basics on bed bugs as well as some of the latest bed bug treatment solutions. Learn how to inspect for and identify bed bugs, the risks associated with infestation, treatment options (conventional and enthotherm), and products and options for protection against bed bugs. Attendees, maintenance & management personnel, are encouraged to bring all their bed-bug-related questions! 

Emergency Services: What to Do in the First 48 Hours! – Jeff Moore and Brent Alexander with SouthRiver Restoration will walk attendees through the first steps to take after a loss occurs via an open dialogue with participants and with actual equipment present. Learn what equipment to use and when to bring in the mediation professionals. Hands-on and collaborative/inter-active learning at its best!

OSHA Right to Know/Hazcom – This class provides an overview of the Globally Harmonized System, Labeling, Safety Data Sheets, HazCom File, Personal Protective Equipment, and much more. Questions to ponder:
How many sections in a SDS?
What number represents the most severe hazard in the GHS?
What is the CIL?
Safety glasses/goggles must have what inscription?

What are REAC Inspectors Looking for Now? The REAC Industry Standard Notice – HUD has found that “Many property owners/agents began preparing their properties for the REAC inspections by hiding the defect or making a substandard repair, in lieu of making an acceptable industry standard repair. Saving them time, money, and effort.”  When properties are making or have made repairs to walls, floors, ceilings, etc., do the new materials need to be an exact match to the original material colors?  What materials are considered suitable for the purpose and free from defects?   What is acceptable workmanship and repair?  What does the phrase “good and workmanlike manner” mean?  Where is a “quick fix” acceptable?  When does the inspector use their best judgment and professional common sense when determining whether this is an acceptable repair or not?   What you have done in the past may not be acceptable in the future.

Work Place & Shop Safety – This 1.5-hour class is an overview of safety for maintenance and non-maintenance staff, as it relates to the work place, commuting, equipment, chemicals and much more. Questions to Ponder:
What is the formula for placement of an extension ladder?
Commonly used office items should be where on the desk?
Class B fire is what material?

Working Lead Safe While Performing Property Maintenance – Property maintenance can involve many things. How we work on buildings can not only affect the worker but the occupant that resides in the unit after the work is finished. Working Lead Safe on units that have the potential to have Lead based paints is very important. How we perform this work will have lasting effects not only on us as the worker but on the health of the occupants. Come learn what it means to work Lead Safe!

Registration/ Fee Payment & Cancellation Policy – Early bird rates available for members only; registration and payment must be received by 5p.m. on October 1st to receive early-bird rate. Standard Rates apply for all registrations/payments received after October 1st—no exceptions. Corrective invoices will be issued for any early bird payments received after the early bird deadline. Registration and registration fee payment must be received by the registration deadline (Oct. 22nd). Registration fees refunded less a $75 cancellation charge if the cancellation notice is received in writing via email to by Oct. 22nd. Non-payment of the fee by the due date does not cancel the registration. No refunds provided after the registration deadline for any reason; substitutions are allowed at any time prior to the start of the event. Partial substitutions are not allowed; i.e., multi-day registrations may not be divided or shared. All no shows are responsible for payment of the full registration fee. Certificates of attendance will be held until full/correct payment is received. Non-payment of fees may result in registration refusal for future events and held certificates for others registered/attending from the same company. Corrective invoices will be issued to non-members registering/paying at the member rate and the balance due must be paid by the event date. A $50 late payment fee will be assessed on all payments received after the registration deadline.
